The Academy shuffles Valencia as the headquarters of the Goya 2021

The Film Academy is seriously studying the possibility of bringing the Goya 2021s to Valencia, according to sources with Cine con Ñ. The organizers of the awards consider the Levantine capital as the first option to host the awards within the framework of the ‘Berlanga Year’, a series of initiatives by the institution to celebrate next year the centenary of the birth of Luis Garcia Berlanga, Valencian of origin. It would be the third consecutive edition outside of Madrid after that of Seville and Malaga.

Since the President of the Academy, Mariano Barroso, announced this tribute in the last edition, Valencia’s candidacy has been on the table, with Valencian local authorities quickly taking a stand. The vice mayor of the city, Sandra Gomez, already did it the day after the gala, who saw Valencia in the ‘Berlanga Year’ “a wink” and assured that the City Council had already made a formal offer for 2021 to Barroso in a meeting prior to the gala.

Both Gomez and later the city’s own mayor, Joan Ribo, were optimistic about the candidacy in January. “If the city and the administrations have the will, the Academy will undoubtedly be very favorable to developing it,” said Gomez. Ribo, for his part, pointed to the “good vibes” they had in this regard and that he saw “many possibilities” of achieving it. Since then, nothing had been heard about the matter, but one year after Berlanga’s centenary (his birthday would be June 12), the Academy continues to be the main option.

As for the specific place that the Goya 2021 could take to Valencia, the Ribo Government team manages two possibilities for an event of this type : Valencia Fair and the City of Arts and Sciences. Ribo assured in January that Feria Valencia was a “safe place”, opting for this space. Other places such as the Velodrome or the Pabellon de la Fuente de San Luis, which would be the homologue to Martin Carpena de Malaga, seem ruled out.

Valencia would be the fourth headquarters of the Goya in its history

If finally, as all the parties point out, the Goya 2021 will move to Valencia next year, it would be the third consecutive edition in which the awards for excellence in Spanish cinema are held outside Madrid. The first was in Barcelona in 2000, and it took 18 years for them to leave the capital again. Then the chosen one was Seville (2019), which has happened in 2020 Malaga, which finally prevailed over the previous one despite the Seville government of Juan Espadas trying to keep the headquarters.

Last year a small competition arose between cities aspiring to host the gala. Up to six locations offered: in addition to Seville and Malaga, there were Palma (which had already made a request the previous year), Bilbao, Zaragoza and, of course, Valencia. In the absence of knowing the protocols for presenting candidacies and with the more than possible delay in the dates of the gala due to the pandemic, so far no other city has expressed its official interest in entering the conflict of 2021.

It must be remembered that the Academy had already in 2018 the condition that leaving Madrid did not entail a cost for the entity’s coffers. The celebration of the 35th Edition of the Goya Awards in Malaga cost more than 2 million euros, which were distributed by the City Council, the Junta de Andalucia, the Diputacion and Unicaja, and the Seville 1.3 million. The Andalusian consistories estimated at more than double (5 million) the direct positive economic impact of bringing the prizes. Valencia will also have to take these numbers into account.
